SUMMARY:A Tribute to Legends Sarah Vaughn and John Coltrane
DESCRIPTION:The Jazz Foundation of West Tennessee presents a tribute to legends Sarah Vaughn and John Coltrane on September 21st\, 7 pm\, at the Ned R. McWherter Cultural Arts Center in Downtown Jackson\, Tennessee. The concert features vocalist Jamille “Jam” Hunter and saxophonist Don Aliquo. Hunter will perform from her CD “Sassy Returns\,” a tribute to Sarah Vaughn\, and Aliquo will play John Coltrane 1961\, a year that was instrumental in the development of the now-icon jazz musician. \nJAMILLE “JAM” HUNTER is a Michigan-born\, Memphis-based jazz and soul singer-songwriter who is making her mark on the music scene with her mesmerizing vocals and contemporary approach to classic and modern jazz. With years of gigging in the R&B and soul arena under her belt and previous classical training\, Jam began to train intensively as a jazz vocalist in Los Angeles at the world Stage of Leimert Part. Practicing technique under the guidance of drummer Billy Higgins\, bassists Al McKibbon and Kevin O’Neal and pianist Dini Clark\, she fell in love with jazz and never looked back. Seeking an international experience\, she left Los Angeles and hit the state in Nagoya\, Japan\, where she honed her craft as the lead vocalist at the Stardust Jazz Lounge. Recently\, Jam released her live recorded CD titled “Sassy Returns: The SV Project.” This tribute to the late\, great Sarah Vaughn was a credit to Jam’s greatest inspiration. Jam\, along with her band\, Mood Swing\, has performed at the River Arts Fest\, The On Location International Film and Music Festival\, The black Arts Fest\, the Memphis International Jazz Festival and the Soulsville Music Fest\, in addition to numerous clubs and venues. \nDON ALIQUO was born in Pittsburgh on May 10th\, 1960. His father\, a proud Italian\, hooked his son on jazz at an early age\, including John Coltrane’s Giant Steps (“Coltrane was my main inspiration”) and Sonny Rollins classics\, including “Strode Rode” and “Pent-Up House.” He has muis degrees from Duquesne University as well as the Berkelee College of Music and has performed with such greats as Greg Osby\, Marvin Stamm\, Roger Humphries\, Eddie Harris\, George Benson\, Stanley Turrentine and others. Aliquo has recorded six CDs\, has taught in China\, Columbia\, and Spain\, and is currently on the faculty at Middle Tennessee State University as a professor of music. \nFor tickets or more event information\, click here.

Featuring Classical Music by the Black Cat Duo\, Andrea Nicole and Dylan Griffith\, and Jazz Music by The Stephen Lee Quartet! \nIn 1979\, President Jimmy Carter designated June as Black Music Appreciation Month to celebrate African American musical influences that comprise an essential part of our nation’s tresured cultural heritage. This year The Jazz Foundation of West Tennessee focuses on classical music with The Black Cat Duo and jazz from Steven M. Lee. \nBlack Cat Duo:  Dylan Griffith is a classically trained\, multi-instrumentalist\, composer\, performer and music educator. With over 20 years of musical experience\, Dylan has exercised her commitment to the arts\, serving as a music professor and the musical director for the C.A.M.A. program at Tennessee State University . She has studied and performed in Paris\, France and Grumo\, Italy. She obtained her B.A. at Spelman College\, her M.M. in music education at Belmont University and is currently working on her M.M. and D.M.A in piano performance at the Rudy Schiedt School of Music at the University of Memphis. Dylan is an assistant professor of music and collaborative piano at Lane College. Andrea Nicole excels in both jazz vocal and classical piano. In 2023\, she embarked on her first jazz tour in the Los Angeles area. She performs extensively across the southern U.S. and is equally adept on the piano whether its gospel\, jazz classical or Broadway tunes. Andrea is currently working on her new album in her hometown of Nashville. \nSteven M. Lee:  Is the Founder/Artistic and Executive Director of the Memphis Jazz Workshop\, a nonprofit that provides music intensives and unparalleled guidance for middle and high school students. He has an undergraduate degree in Jazz Performance from City College University in New York City. A Masters in Education fro Freed Hardeman University and has been in the education sector in the city of Memphis since 2010. He has performed with Gregory Porter\, Ulysses Owens\, Jr.\, Kirk Whalum\, Esperanza Spalding\, Warren Wolf and many more. Lee has been nominated for a Stellar Award and a Kennedy Center Citizen Artist Fellowship. DESCRIPTION:The Jazz Foundation of West Tennessee and Leaders Credit Union present ‘The Sound of Freedom: A Jazz Tribute to the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.’ Guest Performances by the Alex Upton Quartet and the Rod McGaha Quintet. In 2022\, Alex Upton was selected as the winner of the North American Saxophone Alliance’s Jazz Saxophone Competition\, a prestigious biennial competition featuring the best undergraduate\, graduate\, and doctoral saxophonists across the country. He is a doctoral candidate at the University of Memphis Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music. Rod McGaha’s incredible jazz trumpet playing has taken him through many cities in the U.S. and around the world. He has performed with such artists as Lou Rawls\, the O’Jays\, Bebe and Cece Winans\, Take Six\, Kirk Whalum\, Max and his Brass Quintet. His latest recording\, Black Flower Project\, is one of six recordings. A visual artist as well\, McGaha has exhibitions at both the Frist Museum and the Fisk University Carl Van Vechten Galleries in Nashville.
