Learn about General Johnston from time he hears the first shots of the battle up to the moment he passes away from a mortal wound on the afternoon of April 6\, 1862. \nThe hike will begin with a brief meeting at the visitor center before starting the trek. Participants should come dressed for the weather; prepared to hike over steep\, slippery terrain through thick woods\, and the possibility of crossing creeks. SUMMARY:Between Two Rivers and Two Armies: the Confederate Retreat from Corinth
DESCRIPTION:Join Ranger Laura Lee McKellips to explore the actions of the night of October 4\, 1862\, and the fighting at Davis Bridge the next day as the Confederates retreated from Corinth and attempted to escape the clutches of a pursuing Federal Army. \nParticipants will learn about the Union and Confederate positions during the battle on October 5\, 1862\, while visiting and walking out to the various sites involved in the fighting and retreat. \nThe hike will take place from 10:00 am -12:00 pm. Visitors will meet at the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center and car caravan to Davis Bridge and Metamora Hill\, near Pocahontas\, Tennessee. The car caravan will make a few stops along the way to point out important actions that took place on October 5th. \nThe hike to the Davis Bridge site from the parking area is less than 1 mile (roundtrip) over moderate terrain including gravel and dirt. Participants should wear clothing and footwear appropriate for the weather and hiking into the woods. \nInsect repellent\, sunscreen\, and water are highly recommended. Pre-registration is required to participate in the hike. Please call the Corinth Civil War Center at 662-287-9273 to reserve your spot.

DESCRIPTION:The hike will follow the path of General William Nelson’s Division from Wicker Field\, through the Peach Orchard and into Sara Bell’s cotton field on the second day of the battle. Hikers will learn about the forces and commanders involved on both sides as Nelson’s quick advance is met by severe Confederate counterattacks. \nThe hike will begin at Tour Stop #18 (Peach Orchard) at 10:00 am. Hikers should be prepared to walk up to two-miles on uneven terrain. DESCRIPTION:During the first day of the Battle of Shiloh\, Colonel Isaac Campbell Pugh\, a Kentucky native and veteran of the Blackhawk and Mexican Wars\, took command of a brigade in General Hurlbut’s Division\, when his commander fell wounded in Sarah Bell’s cotton field. Follow Park Ranger Timothy Arnold a he details the officers and men that fought under Colonel Pugh’s direction and learn about the struggles they faced while defending against multiple fierce Confederate attacks. The hike will begin at Tour Stop #18 (the Peach Orchard) at 10:00 am. Hikers should be prepared to walk up to one mile on uneven terrain. Sunscreen\, a hat\, comfortable walking shoes\, water and insect repellent are recommended. Pre-registration is required! Your spot can be reserved by calling the Shiloh Visitor Center (731-689-5696) any day between the times 8:00 am-5:00 pm. SUMMARY:Booming on the Battlefield
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, August 5\, and Sunday\, August 6\, the roar of cannon will return to Shiloh National Military Park. The scheduled firing demonstrations will be presented by the Shiloh cannon crew\, firing a 6-pounder field piece. Please meet for the program across the street from the park visitor center. Park living historians will fire the gun\, introduce the equipment and tools of the 19th century cannoneers\, and tell the story of how these powerful guns impacted the outcome of battle at Shiloh. The park hopes this special experience will help you imagine the smell and sounds of the 1862 battlefield. The cannon firing demonstrations will take place at 10:00 am\, 11:30 am\, 1:30 pm\, and 3:00 pm on Saturday and at 11:00 am\, 1:00 pm\, and 2:30 pm on Sunday. Each program will last approximately 20-minutes\, and interpret the weapons\, projectiles\, and procedures Civil War artillery crews used during the war. The award-winning park film\, ‘Shiloh: Fiery Trial’\, is being shown in the park visitor center auditorium at the top of the hour starting at 8:00 am with the last showing at 4:00 pm. There is never a fee for park programs or to enter Shiloh National Military Park.
