Shiloh Ranger Hike will Explore the Confederate Assaults on the Western Sector of the Battlefield

Shiloh National Military Park is pleased to announce a guided ranger hike on August 10, 2024, entitled: “The Enemy had Made a Furious Attack.” Join Ranger Anthony Killion at 10:00 am for a guided walk from Rhea Spring to Water Oaks Pond, retracing the steps the attacking Confederates took on the morning of April 6, 1862.

Early on April 6, Confederate forces inadvertently committed most of their army to the western sector of Shiloh battlefield. The weight of these attacks would drive William T. Sherman’s and John A. McClernand’s Union Divisions back from their defensive positions throughout the day, beginning with Sherman’s stand at Shiloh Church.

The fighting around Shiloh Church and the Crossroads near Water Oaks Pond was some of the fiercest of the battle, with opposing battle lines advancing and retreating across that area throughout the morning of April 6th. Hikers will examine the ground, the individuals, and the history of General Albert Sidney Johnston’s assault on this part of the Federal line. This program will cover approximately two miles of mixed terrain, including paved and natural surfaces.

To sign up and attend this program, please call the Shiloh Visitor Center at 731-689-5696 between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm any day of the week. This hike will begin at 10:00 am at tour stop #6 and will last no longer than two hours. Be sure to dress for the weather, bring water, wear sturdy walking shoes, and to use insect repellant. Thunderstorms will cancel the hike.
