The City of Jackson will celebrate Black History Month during the month of February for the fourth year at city hall by showcasing performing arts from members of the city’s Black community.

This year we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Black History Month. “Negro History Week,” launched in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson (later recognized as Black History Month by President Gerald R. Ford in 1976), was created to celebrate Black American achievements.

Our 2026 celebration will open on Friday, Feb. 6, with a proclamation by Mayor Scott Conger , speaker Don McCorry, presentations by Kenzie Littrell, Theta Iota Graduate Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, and a performance by Joston Cooper.

The closing ceremony will be held on Friday, Feb. 27 with a poetry reading from Ian Tamayo and performances by West Bemis Chorus & Howard Ramsby, and the Kappa Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. (Lane College)

City Hall will be lit with red, yellow, and green lights for the month of February in celebration of the month.
