Booming on the Battlefield over Labor Day Weekend

Shiloh is excited to announce cannon firing demonstrations will take place on this Saturday, August 31, and Sunday, September 1, 2024. “In commemoration of the Labor Day weekend and the unofficial end of summer, Shiloh will host cannon firing demonstrations on the battlefield,” said Park Superintendent Catherine Bragaw.

The cannon firing demonstrations will take place on Saturday at 10:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3:00 p.m., and on Sunday at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 2:30 p.m., across the street from the park’s visitor center. Each program will last approximately 20-minutes, and introduce visitors to the weapons, projectiles, and procedures Civil War artillery crews used during the war. The gun will be fired twice by Shiloh’s volunteer Confederate cannon detachment during each demonstration.

“The 6-pounder field piece being demonstrated next weekend, was the most common field artillery piece used in the battle of Shiloh,” said Bragaw. “Of the 251 cannon used in the battle, 96 of them were 6-pounders,” she continued.

All programs are free and open to the public, and reservations are not necessary.
