The Jazz Foundation of West Tennessee and Leaders Credit Union present ‘The Sound of Freedom: A Jazz Tribute to the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’ Guest Performances by the Alex Upton Quartet and the Rod McGaha Quintet. In 2022, Alex Upton was selected as the winner of the North American Saxophone Alliance’s Jazz Saxophone Competition, a prestigious biennial competition featuring the best undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral saxophonists across the country. He is a doctoral candidate at the University of Memphis Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music. Rod McGaha’s incredible jazz trumpet playing has taken him through many cities in the U.S. and around the world. He has performed with such artists as Lou Rawls, the O’Jays, Bebe and Cece Winans, Take Six, Kirk Whalum, Max and his Brass Quintet. His latest recording, Black Flower Project, is one of six recordings. A visual artist as well, McGaha has exhibitions at both the Frist Museum and the Fisk University Carl Van Vechten Galleries in Nashville.
