Arts in McNairy to Host Film Screening and CD Release Party Celebrating McNairy County Music History

Arts in McNairy (AiM) is excited to host the “Legacy Music of McNairy Film Screening and Littlejohn Sessions Vol II CD Release Party,” an evening celebrating the music of McNairy County and surrounding areas. The free event will take place on Friday, April 26, 2024 at 6:00 PM at The Latta Theatre in Selmer, TN.

The “Legacy Music of McNairy” film takes viewers on a stroll down memory lane, diving into the rich history of the talented musicians in the McNairy County area as preserved by local historian, Dr. Shawn Pitts, and the Traditional Arts Committee. Pitts describes the film and CD as “more than a decade in the making. They draw on Arts in McNairy’s vast archive of sound recordings, photos and video interviews to tell the story of Stanton Littlejohn, Earl Latta, and an incredible crop of postwar musicians who forged a lasting legacy from one-room schoolhouses, modest homes and an auto garage in McNairy County, Tennessee.”

Before the screening, attendees will enjoy an old-time jam led by musicians Wayne Jerrolds and David Killingsworth from the film. They will be accompanied by descendants and bandmates of additional personalities showcased. The film will be presented in two parts, starting at 7:00 PM. The intermission provided will allow attendees the opportunity to purchase the “Littlejohn Sessions Volume II” CD – available for the first time at the event.

The “Legacy Music of McNairy” film was made possible by AiM and a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission. The screening and release party is open to the public. For additional information or press, contact Dr. Shawn Pitts at artsinmcnairy@gmail.com or 731.435.3288.
